Magnesium Supplements
Magnesium supplements may be helpful to those who suffer from low amounts of magnesium
such as people with malabsoptive issues such as Crohn's disease, conditions arising from gluten sensitivity, intestinal surgery such as gastric bypass and regional enteritis. Magnesium supplements may also benefit those who cannot properly control their diabetes. Older adults at risk of magnesium deficiency may also use supplements.
Magnesium depletion can also be caused by a number of bodily functions such as excessive diarrhea or vomiting. Some medications such as certain antibiotics, diuretics and cancer treatments like Cisplatin can also cause a loss of magnesium. There are several signals of deficiency including abnormal heart rhythms, appetite loss, confusion, coronary spasms, depression, disorientation, muscle contractions and cramps, numbness and seizures.
Magnesium is an essential mineral. It assists in more than 300 biochemical reactions to the body such as energy metabolism and protein synthesis. Magnesium also helps keep bones strong, maintain normal nerve and body function and maintain a steady heart rhythm. The recommended daily allowance for a healthy adult between 19-30 years old is 310 milligrams for females and 400 milligrams a day for males. For people over thirty one, an additional 10 milligrams is recommended.
If taken in too high a does, magnesium side effects can lead to abdominal cramping and diarrhea. Magnesium toxicity has also been linked to magnesium containing antacids and laxatives. Symptoms of toxicity are similar to those of deficiency with some differences: breathing difficulties, changes in mental state, diarrhea, extremely low blood pressure, muscle weakness and nausea.
There are a number of foods that contain magnesium that can be eaten to improve ones health. Nuts are a good source of magnesium such as cashews, almonds, soybeans, nuts and peanuts. Halibut offers 90 mg of magnesium per three ounces of fish. Other good sources of magnesium include potatoes, bananas, lentils and raisins.
There are a number of magnesium supplements available in numerous forms for those who wish to increase their intake. A blood test by your doctor can help you determine if you need magnesium and how much you should take. Magnesium is easily available in capsules, powders, and tinctures.
