Snugly set under a dense canopy of evergreen forests

, Mahabaleshwar is a scenic hill resort that was developed by the British during their rule in India. Nestled amidst the lofty ranges of the Western Ghats, Mahabaleshwar is renowned for its imposing woods and scenic beauty that attracts tourists from all across the country to this place. The British established their summer capital of the Bombay Province in this region and developed it into bustling hill resort. Till date, Mahabaleshwar retains many remnants of the colonial rule like the palatial structures lining the broad streets here and the imposing colonial bungalows that dot the entire region. During the British rule and even for some time afterwards, Mahabaleshwar was referred to as Malcolm Peth.

Mahabaleshwar is set at an altitude of 1372 m and offers spectacular views of the pristine valleys down below and the imposing peaks that fringe it on all sides. The plateau of Mahabaleshwar is made fertile by five rivers, Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Savitri and Gayatri. Of these, the river Krishna is believed to originate in this region from the mouth of a holy cows statue in the Mahabaleshwar Temple. This temple is also one of the regions most prominent attractions that attracts devotees and tourists alike to Mahabaleshwar. The main idol here is a Lingam of black stone symbolizing Lord Shiva. The lingam is believed to be the materialisation of the divine according to Hindu mythology. It is after this idol here that the hills and the entire region was named Mahabaleshwar meaning 'one with great strength'.

Another attraction here is the Rajpuri Caves in Panchgani. A Lord Karthikeya Temple here that is constructed out of the sand taken from these caves. Panchgani situated near Mahabaleshwar is a popular picnic spot offering breathtaking views of the Dhom Dam backwaters and the Krishna valley.

Tourists can travel within and around Mahabaleshwar by hiring taxis that take you on a tour of the entire region at a rate close to INR 15 per km. Taxis can either be hired from taxi stands or even the hotels you stay in can arrange for the same. For those who are on a tight budget can also avail bus service which is dependable and quite comfortable too for single travellers and backpackers.

Mahabaleshwar is very famous for its strawberries and many tourists plan their trip around the months of January and February when these are available in plenty. Indulge your tastebuds to an exotic treat with a bowl of succulent strawberries with cream that is sure to leave you asking for more. Between the months of April and May, the fruit of the season is mulberries, which can also be enjoyed with cream or as a delightful dessert.
