Maids Working Hard Around The World

Maids work in a few different types of environments

. They can work in domestic environments for a person or family. They can work in a commercial and corporate setting on the day or night shift, or in a hotel or similar setting performing similar shift work, but with greater domestic duties similar to what they would perform in a client's home environment. They usually don't get a lot of praise or credit for the detailed grunt work that they do. So some domestic employees take it upon themselves to ask for little perks every now and then. After the Jennifer Lopez hotel scandal in Germany recently, is it now a good time to reconsider the consideration extended to people who work as maids?

There are plenty of stories out there about how different people feel about receiving help around their home, their office or in their hotel rooms when vacationing or completing mandatory travel. They occasionally have to clean unspeakable messes and accommodate selective clients while still providing the high standard of service that they were trained to provide. They seek out the cleaning products and best presentation methods for the space that they are required to clean and organize. And for these reasons, many men and women who hire them have so many positive stories about receiving a little extra shampoo at the hotel, seeing special instructions followed for office cleaning, or when specific cleaning products are used to accommodate certain family members or certain environmentally responsible habits in a household.

But now maids all over the world are getting a little extra attention because people are taking pity or pointing fingers at a woman who's reason for being relocated to a different hotel has become a story that has spread beyond local fodder in her country. As the story has been retold and rewritten, the maid performed her job for the room(s). And when she believed the singer/actress had returned, the housekeeper returned to the room, rang the doorbell and proceeded to request an autograph from Ms. Lopez's staff.

Maids everywhere, along with the general public who has heard of this story, are shaking their heads because they can't believe she made such a mistake, on one hand. On the other hand, people feel pity for her because they wonder what happened to the steps of protocol and discretion that most other maids follow in order to avoid such an embarrassing mistake. The fact is that she was not just a regular person on the street or in the grocery store bumping into her favorite actress and was well within her rights to ask for an autograph; she was in her place of employment as a professional.
