Maintaining And Repairing Wood Fence

Wooden fences are generally quite sturdy, but even they can be damaged if struck by sufficient force or improperly cared for

. One of the most common reason wooden fences are damaged is because they are not painted or lacquered to protect them from the effects of weathering, which can warp and weaken the integrity of the fence.

If a wooden fence has become warped or otherwise damaged, it is almost impossible to salvage that section of fence. It will likely need to be replaced, and here we'll go over some general information on how to do so, as well as a few tips to help the job go a little more smoothly.

The repairs necessary to fix a wooden fence depend largely on the type of damage caused. Most fences are made with horizontal cross beams that support vertical panels of wood. If one or more of these panels are broken or damaged, they can be removed from the cross beam and replaced.

If the cross beam itself is damaged, then every single panel will need to be removed from it, the cross beam replaced, and then the panels reattached. This is, obviously, more work, but actually less expensive than replacing multiple panels.

Ideally, your fence is held together using screws, meaning it can be taken apart with relative ease. If it is nailed together, you may have some trouble prying the panels apart without damaging them. A crowbar can make this job easier. Once you've disconnected the offending panel (or all of them if it's the cross beam), you will need the replacement. Make sure you know what kind of wood your fence uses, and the specifications of the piece you are attempting to replace.

The replacement piece should also be painted or lacquered to match the rest of the fence, and to protect it. If the paint job on the fence is several years old, the new piece will stand out when freshly painted, although if your fence's paint is that old it could likely stand a new coat anyway.

Once you've got the proper replacement parts, they can be screwed or hammered into place with hopefully what is relative ease. If screwing in a panel, make sure that the screws are not entering the same exact place they were before, as this will make the seal weak. Try inverting the screw pattern, or changing it from a square to a rectangle.
