Maintenance Tips For Optical Mice

More and more computer owners are switching to optical mice each year

. The old, mechanical ball mice have served their purpose admirably, but they just can't compete with an optical mouse when it comes to sensitivity and accuracy. Also, with their high number of moving parts, mechanical ball mice don't have the same lifespan as a modern mouse. That's not to say that optical mice are perfect. They also require cleaning and occasional maintenance to keep them functioning at a high level. Here are a few ideas for keeping your mouse great condition:

Optical mice may not pick up as much dust and debris as the old roller ball models, but they still get dirty. This is often evidenced by erratic movements of the cursor and lack of sensitivity. To correct the issue, disconnect the mouse from your computer and turn it upside down. There will be 2-5 pads on the bottom and this is where most dirt and dust gathers.

Using a penny or your fingernail, carefully rub them clean. Don't use a knife or other sharp object, which could damage the pads.

If this technique doesn't work, dip a cloth in water and moisten the pads. Place a clean sheet of white paper on your desk and set the mouse on top. Pressing down on the mouse, drag it across the paper. Doing this several times cleans the pads and allows you to see what is coming off onto the paper.

If your entire mouse is dirty, a more thorough cleaning is in order. Dampen a cloth with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and then clean the entire exterior. Be careful not to get excess moisture in the sensor area.

If your mouse is inaccurate and has erratic cursor control, the sensor area may be dirty. Use a plain Q-tip to gently clean it.

Never open your mouse or attempt to clean the interior. Optical mice utilize sensitive technology and damage is likely to occur. Following these suggestions will keep your mouse going strong.
