Maintenance Tips; Keeping Your Fridge Freezer In Great Condition

It is never fun when your trusty fridge freezer

, which you rely upon so much, breaks down. Sometimes it cannot be helped and the machine has truly come to the end of its lifespan. However a great way to ensure that the model you own lasts as long as possible is to carry out some simple maintenance.

This will not only save you money in the long run but also help to prevent it from incurring problems. Here are a few simple tips to help that your appliance performs to the best of its ability.

Defrost regularly

Defrosting the freezer compartment every few weeks is a must. Think build ups of ice will cause the appliance to run less efficiently and it will drain more electricity as it works harder to run.

Clean the machine

Keeping the fridge freezer clean is not only great for hygiene but will help to prevent more serious problems. In particular ensure that the seal to the door is kept spick and span. A build up of dirt on the sealing strip could cause it to become less effective. It can warp the material, meaning that cold air can creep out. If this area is left unclean for longer periods of time this may cause a build up of mould. If this happens the seal may become completely useless and the door may not shut at all.

Do not overload

Treat your freezer with care, it can only take so much weight, so be careful what you put on the shelves. Do not cram it full or place very heavy items on the shelves as this can cause them to warp or break. Glass shelves are sturdier however they do not allow as good air circulation around the appliance as wire shelves do.

The same applies to the door storage spaces. Consider what items can be placed in these slots, try not to put too many heavy goods here, otherwise the hinges will be under too much pressure and could snap.

Vacuum

It sounds a little crazy, who vacuums a fridge? Well in fact it makes perfect sense, the coils at the rear of the appliance can become clogged with dust and if this happens the fridge will have to work much harder, thus zapping more electricity. A regular blast of the vacuum in this area can help to prevent this situation.

These simple steps could make a huge difference to the lifespan of your machine, taking five minutes out to do these tasks could save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
