Metal detecting is a rough and rusty job with huge amounts of dirt, dust, water, humidity, moisture and many external factors. If a detectorist happens to take good care of his metal detector and accessories, its overall ability increases.

Some basic tips for metal detector's care and maintenance are as follows

Clean your metal detector thoroughly with a wet piece of cloth once in a while, even if it is not is use. After a field trip, clean it again before you keep it in its container. After cleaning with a damp cloth, use a dry cotton cloth for better results.

It is a sensitive instrument so it should be handled appropriately. Do not use it as a support or as a way of assistance for standing up. Do not rest your hand on it.

Remove the batteries when not in use to avoid leaks.

Keep the detector in a dry (moisture free) place which is away from direct sunlight.

Cover the metal detector coil with search coil cover.

For land based metal detectors, even small amounts of moisture (if you happen to use it in moist places) can create problems, so make sure you clean and dry your detector ( especially the coil) before you store it.

Water and moisture have dire effects on your metal detector so respect nature and plan your trips well in advance keeping the weather forecasts in mind. However close you may be towards finding a treasure, don't use your metal detector when it is raining. If needed, use protective accessories while working in harsh conditions, but these are best avoided.

The best advice is to invest in the best quality metal detectors which have better functions and also come with warrantee, just in case controls don't work properly.

Use the equipment correctly for a better shelf life and a better performance.

Check its performance once in a while.

Adhering to these tips will definitely help in the long run. Not only your metal detector is an expensive tool but it is prone to a lot of wear and tear so maintenance and cleaning should be more frequently during monsoons and winters.
