Major Appliances And Your Electric Bill

Major appliances make all the difference in your home and lifestyle

. They are absolutely a necessity in most cases. And even those small appliances that help out really do cut down preparation time for food, cleaning, and your general chores, are worth having. But they do all add up over time on the electric bill. However, there are things you can do to lower your bill.

The first thing you need to look at, especially now in the summer time, is your use of your air conditioners even if you have small, cheap air conditioners in your apartment or house. Air conditioners use the most amount of electricity because you often have it turned on the most of the day. It takes a lot for your air conditioner to be able to generate that cool air and it works harder to do so for larger rooms. The smartest move you can make is keeping air conditioners in smaller rooms where it is more necessary, like the bedroom. Always keep the door closed so it isn't struggling to cool off the entire house. You'll always want to either put it on a timer, or buy one with a thermostat so that it turns off when the room reaches a certain temperature.

When it comes to one of your other big major appliances - the refrigerator - it's all about setting the temperature to a setting where the food will still stay fresh. But you shouldn't be overdoing it. Set the fridge and freezer to the basic, default settings and everything will still be kept as cool as it should be. You'll also want to make sure you don't open the doors too much and for too long. Think of what you want before you go in there; don't stand with it open. You'd be surprised how much energy it can waste.

Lights need to remain off in rooms you aren't occupying. Even if you are will only be cooking for 20 minutes or so, turn off that living room light until you go back into it later to eat and watch television. It's as easy as a flip of the switch and can save you money that adds up.

Speaking of cooking, if you have an electric oven that is going to be adding to your bill as well. Don't leave it on any longer than it needs to be. While it may be convenient to leave the oven top running to keep those beans warm, you'll expend less electricity by reheating them quickly in the microwave than keeping the oven running.
