Major League Baseball In The Media
While the NFL may have surpassed Major League Baseball in popularity
, baseball is still America's great game. The game has a rich history in the country that is 150 years old. Almost since the inception of the game, there has been some form of media coverage.
In the early years of baseball, newspapers told the tale of all the games. There were reporters and statisticians watching every game and reporting on them. As a result, the popularity of the game continued to grow. Around the turn of the century, baseball was hitting its stride in popularity.
In 1910, a batting contest was sponsored by Chalmers, a popular automaker. The contenders were Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie. Cobb was regarded as the game's greatest villain while Lajoie was well liked in the game. The popularity of the race was well covered by the media and it brought baseball to the forefront of the news. A decade later, a scandal involving the Chicago White Sox throwing the World Series was largely brought to light through investigative reporting.
The development of radio was a huge change in the game. Now, people could listen to the action from their own home. By the 1940's, some baseball games were starting to be televised. In 1947, the World Series was televised for the first time. By this time television sets were becoming common. 1951 saw the first baseball game broadcast in color. That same year, Bobby Thompson hit his infamous 'shot heard round the world' in a game broadcast nationally, leading to even more popularity for the sport.
In 1971, the first World Series night game took place, which saw over 60 million people watch the game on television. The result was many more national prime time games in broadcast. The 1980's and 1990's saw various networks take their turn at baseball broadcasts. CBS, NBC, and ABC all had runs televising the game. ESPN took baseball to a whole new level in the 1990's, broadcasting weekly games including a Sunday night game of the week.
In 2009, Major League Baseball started its own cable network that would broadcast baseball content year round. Now, baseball can be found on television at any time. Events like the amateur draft are aired on television. Every major league team has its own television contract to broadcast their games. Baseball remains popular in feature films as well, with dozens of hit movies about the game remaining popular to this day.
