Hotel management also includes Cruise Ship Hotel management, Hospital Administration and Catering, Hotel and Tourism Associations, Airline Catering and Cabin Services, Club management, Forest Lodges, and Guest Houses.

A hotel manager is a person who is assigned a management position within a hotel, motel, or a resort. The duties and titles may vary by hotel group. Hotel managers are responsible for the efficient and profitable operation of their establishments. Hotel industry experience is an essential qualification for any management occupation. The working hours generally include long shifts, late hours, weekends, and holidays as this industry operates on 24 hour basis. A hotel manager works in a fast -paced environment and there is a high level of interaction with guests, employess, investors, and other managers.

The upper management of a hotel consists of senior managers, departmental heads and general managers. Hotel manager's tasks depend on the company which may include scheduling breaks, covering a window for check in or check out, handling cash, reconciling bank accounts, writing a review for an employee, disciplining an employee or handling dissatisfied guests.Further,manager's responsibility also includes knowing about all current local events as well as the events being held on the hotel property. Managers will be required to attend regular departmental and company meetings. A hotel or casino property may need additional duties concerning special events being held on property for casino complimentary guests.

Being a service industry, having the correct attitude is most important for working in a hotel. The employees must have an extrovert and pleasant personality, capability for hard work and a liking for interacting with people. A hotel manager must be capable of handling challenging situations wisely and calmly without affecting the reputation of the company. In order to work in five or seven star hotels with top level or middle level management candidates must attain a degree in hotel management. Some hotels hire only trained hotel management graduates. Those who are interested in this hospitality industry can do degree course soon after passing 12th offered by various universities.

For giving Hotel management entrance exam, the minimum criterion is 10+2 with 50% marks. Even if one scores less than 50%, he or she can do a diploma or certificate course in hotel management. Some hotel management institutes provide training cum job placement to the students. Indian hotel management institutes conduct entrance exams before selecting a candidate for the course. Hotel Management Entrance examination is conducted on an All India Basis to offer admissions to various institutes and universities in India offering hotel management courses.
