Make Money From Blogging: Top 5 Blogging Blunders To Avoid

There are some things that you just shouldn't do when you are blogging. These things are very counterproductive to your success, and will cause your readers to leave your blog and never come back. If you are doing some of these things, you should take a step back and assess what your goals are for your blogging. Here are some of the common blunders I have experienced with my clients over the past year:

1. Partially completed blogs -- I see this all the time and it is a major issue. Once you start to build your blog, you need to complete all the basic steps and pages to get your blog fully functional. It is easy to forget to do some steps and then your blog is out there for visitors to find. Once you start your blog, you need to keep working on it until you have several posts up correctly and all your recommended pages completed to your satisfaction. You do not want to put this off until tomorrow or next week. You may forget to finish things, and your blog will not reflect on you very well.

2. Broken links -- You want to make sure all of your links work correctly. This is very important to any banner ads you may have in your sidebars. The standard online is pretty high these days. If one of your visitors clicks a banner and goes to "Page Not Found", they are going to leave your blog. You do not want this to happen with your precious visitors. Check and then double check all your links on your pages.

3. Only a home page available -- This is an area where the bar is really being raised online. You need to have some additional pages for your visitors and the search engines to find that lets them know you are a real person that is there to help people. You should have a Terms of Use, Privacy Policy and Earnings Disclaimer on your blog. You should also have an About Me and Contact Us page available as well. This is becoming more of a requirement to do business online versus a "nice to have" thing. You should take the time to comply with this requirement right away. It will actually help your sales and your online reputation.

4. Naked affiliate links all over the place -- If you are going to try and sell a number of products on your site, you should learn to make "redirect links" that mask the numerous affiliate links that will be visible to your visitors and the search engines. You do not want your site to be viewed as a "thin affiliate site" by Google. This will do you a lot of harm with them. You need to learn how to get this fixed ASAP. Once again, it is just a good business practice to do this.

5. No theme to blog other than "selling stuff" -- When you look at your site, what message is it sending. Is is "I am here to help you solve your problems" or is it "Come buy stuff from me". If you take a step back and really look at your site, you may be surprised at the message you are sending. You do not want to come across as only being there to sell stuff to your readers. That is not what they are looking for from the blogs that they will bookmark and frequently visit. Make sure you are sending the right message to your very valuable visitors.

I am sure you are not guilty of any of these particular blunders. If you are, you should take the time to fix them immediately. The online standards for blogs are going up all the time, and you need to be in compliance with what your average visitor and the search engines are looking for. Once you understand what not to do on your blog, you can focus your efforts on doing more of the right things. This will help you cross the line into profitability as you start to make money from your blogging efforts.
