It seems like almost every business out there now has an affiliate program

. For those of you that don't already know what affiliate marketing is, it's basically getting rewarded for sending traffic and leads to company web sites. If you have a web site and place an affiliate url on your site, then a visitor clicks it and heads to the advertisers site and fills out a form or buys something, you would earn a commission.

There are also "affiliate networks", which house a lot of different affiliate offers so you don't have to go from site to site to run different offers. An excellent way for these affiliate networks to get more attention and traffic to their site, is by running affiliate marketing contests. They are usually set in performance, earnings and referral structures.

1) Performance Based

An affiliate network may offer 10% bonus or set cash prize for any affiliate that can produce 50% more revenue in a set month vs. the previous month. This cash prize acts as an incentive, while helping the affiliate network generate more money.

2) Earnings Based

Many affiliate networks will hold huge contest promotions for everyone in the network. The prize could be a big trip on a cruise or something of that nature, but it's only awarded to the top 10 or 20 affiliates within a network. This is a big prize, but also only limited to the best affiliates in the network.

3) Referrals Based

An excellent way to earn commissions through affiliate networks is to send new affiliate their way. For every referred affiliate, you could earn 1-5% commission on the life of their earnings. Some networks will reward you with prizes if you refer the biggest publisher each month.

As you can see, running affiliate marketing contests is an excellent way to keep affiliates motivated and while making thhat individual affiliate network stand out from the others.
