Make Simple and Delicious Cheese Fondue For Home Parties
Fondue is fun, easy-to-make, flavorful and provides a great social activity for your friends and family.
And it even adds a little retro fun to your party style - since fondue first exploded in popularity in America in the 1950s, peaked in the '70s and has in recent years seen its popularity return.
Of course, cheese fondue history goes back much farther than American dinner parties and hasn't always been a chic party meal. What's now thought of as a fun gourmet party dish originated long ago in the Alps, where farmers were looking for some flavor in the food-scarce end of winter season.
They decided their best bet was combining and heating up three of the few items in year round supply - hard cheeses, bread and wine. The result was what we call fondue, a dished named for Fondre - the French word for melt and/or blend.
And with so many different fondue recipes, styles and serving options, serving gourmet fondue can be a truly creative and entertaining experience.
Fondue for you
To get started on a new French cheese fondue culinary adventure, here's what you...
Need: A fondue pot, a heat source, a fondue recipe, (see below for a few) cheese, foods to dip and friends to enjoy it all with.
As for the pot, old models with on-table heaters can often be found for cheap at second hand stores. Fondue can also be made ahead of time in your kitchen and served in a regular dish if you'd prefer a less active meal.
Should drink: Wine (of course) is always at the top of the list when choosing fondue pairings- either the same wine used in the fondue mixture or simply a red wine or another selected to accompany whatever cheese is being enjoyed. Another great beverage to serve with fondue is tea, which is a traditional fondue pairing dating to the days when fondue was served by farmers at the end of bleak winters.
Do with the leftovers: If you thought you'd be left scooping goopy fondue out of your pot to the garbage after the party think again! After your guests leave, pour leftover fondue out, while still hot, into a storage bowl and wait for it to cool there before refrigeration. Take it out the next day and use it as a delicious sauce for a casual chicken meal.
Next time you're planning a party consider serving fondue - it's sophisticated, fun and refreshingly easy to prepare!
