Make Stroke Recovery Come True
Just like all aspects of human existences we are always looking for better ways to do things. The realm of stroke recovery is one of these areas. Ever since recovery from stroke became a reality therapist, practitioners and caregivers have been looking for better methods of improving recovery. Or have they? While I do feel that some people who work with stroke recovery are seeking better answers, more efficient methods and new techniques. I feel a majority of the people who are in need of stroke rehabilitation do not receive any of the best or latest techniques in stroke exercises.
There can be a few reasons for this. Mainstream beliefs tend to get indoctrinated in the general public. A news report here, a magazine article there and before you know it, a certain belief is accepted as science and once this happens it can be very hard to change. We see this in other areas such as health and fitness. The three stroke recovery myths that this article will address are that the brain cannot change, only a small window of stroke recovery opportunity exists and lastly that there are not better ways to perform stroke rehabilitation. These are all myths that repeated and perpetuated with no science to back them up and are potentially affecting the recovery of many stroke survivors.
I cannot believe that myth number one still gets any credence. Some people still feel that the brain is set in stone and cannot change. We see the brain changing all the time and at every age. Every time we learn something new, the brain has changed. For example for you to learn a new skill such as like playing tennis requires your brain to change. As you improve, your co-ordination gets better, your speed improves and your accuracy sharpens all this must be reflected by changes in your brain and nervous system. The brain controls everything, and when changes happen like the previously mentioned tennis ones, the brain must have changed. This myth has been dispelled by science and neurology and as a far as I am concerned is really, pardon the pun, a no brainer to argue against.
One myth I often hear from therapists is that stroke recovery can only happen in a small window of opportunity after the stroke. Some say 6 weeks, others say a year. After this period no more recovery progress can be made. This is absolute garbage. Why would the brain set a countdown timer on its potential for recovery? It doesn't make any sense. The same processes that enable recovery to happen are always present they just need to be activated. Sometimes it may take the right frequency or type of exercises to stimulate the recovery in the brain.
And lastly the same stroke rehabilitation techniques that have been used in the last 20 years must still be the best. The last 20 years has seen an explosion in brain research and this has led to a flow over of new and exciting techniques to apply to stroke recovery. Unfortunately it takes time for new breakthroughs to be exposed to the masses. And many of the latest and best techniques such as mirror therapy and constraint induced movement therapy. The use of these therapies can greatly speed up stroke recovery and ensure the best chance of reaching your recovery potential.
I hope this article has opened your mind up with regards to the topic of stroke recovery. There is so much false information written about the brain and stroke rehabilitation sometimes in can be hard to know what to believe. It has been my goal to try and educate and expose people to not only the truth but the best methods and techniques for stroke recovery whether they are a stroke survivor, family member or health practitioner.
