Make Sure Everyone Around The Premises Stays On Their Feet

Health and safety laws place great responsibility on employers to ensure that their

staff can work safely at all times but the responsibility for workplace safety lies with everyone. There are strict guidelines governing which health and safety signs have to be displayed and their location, while every sign itself must also comply with strict regulations over its specification. This includes stipulations covering its colour, size and even type style.

Therefore, home-made signs are not acceptable, and anyone found displaying these, or not having the right signs in place, is liable to heavy penalties, up to and including imprisonment. For most of the year, safety signs are enough to ensure that every member of staff and visitor to a business is aware of their obligations, and remains safe.

But when the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse, a new set of hazards present themselves, in the form of potential slipping dangers, with the attendant risk of injury which these bring. Here too, there are appropriate signs which should be put in place all in a range of highly visible colours to make them easily spotted and they must remain in use for as long as the difficult conditions persist.

The greatest number of workplace hazards is always to be found when conditions under foot are wet, greasy or slippery. And when these arise, temporary health and safety signs should always be put in place, where they will be easily spotted by both staff and visitors alike.

Grit bins are also a useful buy to make sure that a business is prepared for the worst possible underfoot conditions. They are quite cheap to fill with salt or an appropriate alternative, and a relatively small outlay can save considerably more in terms of lost working time if vehicles needing to get to the premises are held up by having to negotiate slippery areas.

With local authorities struggling for cash, areas such as industrial estates and business parks are low priorities for snow and ice clearance. So any business which invests in its own salt spreaders and other snow-clearing equipment is likely to recover their cost in the form of a much safer working environment and the appreciation of staff and customers alike.
