Water mark stains are very common signs of wear and tear of wooden furniture. White spots and water marks are areas of severe discolouration, normally caused by water, alcohol, or hot objects being placed on the surface such as a cigarettes or a hot drink. People often discard these pieces of furniture as ruined or they spend a fortune taking them in to professional restorers. However this need not be the case because if the stain is not too severe (if it has not penetrated deep into the wood grain) and if you treat the stain speedily then there is no reason why the piece of furniture can be restored to its original state.

If the stain is only on the surface and not too severe then the following DIY tips can help to restore your furniture. The first tip may seem like an old wives tale, to use mayonnaise to restore your wooden furniture but it seems that the tried and tested method of rubbing a bit of mayonnaise on the stain with a paper towel does the trick on most water marks. If the stain is more severe then leaving the mayonnaise overnight may be required. The second tip includes combining mineral oil and salt. This mixture is gently rubbed over the affected area until the stain is removed.

There are many products on the market that can be used when restoring your wood, but for high quality products there are two things you can look for: bees wax and carnauba wax. The bees wax in products will restore the lustre and shine in your wood while the carnauba wax will give a durable shine. By buffing your wooden furniture you will be warming the polish enough to be pushed into the grain of the wood to restore its lustre.

You can also use a restoring product to tone up or tone down new wood, fill in small surface scratches and chips on older surfaces or antiques, or achieve special effects in wooden furniture. Be sure to choose a product that is available with a clear coat as well as an array of light, medium and dark wood tones, so you can choose one close to the original finish or create special effects with contrasting shades.
