Make Your Own Braided Rugs For Your Home
Braided rugs have been a simple, affordable way to make your homes more comfortable and colorful for hundreds of years now. But with today's fast-paced world, few of us have the time to create these beautiful pieces of forgotten art. However, the addition of these rugs to your homes is always a cause for pride. Creating your own braided rugs and doing them easily by knowing the proper way with satisfying results every time creates unbelievable feeling of satisfaction. Such is the case when you follow these simple instructions.
The first thing that you should do is to prepare the materials that you will need like carpet padding, fabrics - in colors that complement the room (at least three different colors or patterns), marker, pair of scissors, and silicone adhesive. The fabrics which are most adaptable for creating braided oval rugs are wool and cotton. Colors of rug may be chosen to accent the color of your room using three or four different colors or even many colors for a bright multicolored effect. Please remember that the condition of the fabric determines how long the rugs will last so it is very important to use brand new or almost new material.
Proper preparation of braiding strips is of utmost important. Cut material into strips one to three inches wide taking into consideration the weight of the fabric; that is, the heavier the fabric, the narrower the strips. Sew strips together diagonally so that when you fold it for braiding there will not be a thickness at seam. It is very important that each strip has the same thickness so that your finished product will not bulge or swell. Take each strip then fold each side to center then fold strip in half. You may slip stitch these strips to prepare for braiding. Wind strips around a discarded cardboard roll.
In braiding the strips, the process is called three-strand braid. Take three strips of material that have been prepared. Sew them together at ends. Sew only eight or nine feet of strips together at one time so that braid will not tangle. Join end of braid to something stable. Mentally number strips from one to three, from left to right, then begin braiding. Pass strip no. 3 over center strip no. 2 and under strip no. 1. Continue this same procedure until three of the four yards is braided then begin sewing or lacing rug together.
To create the braided oval rug, you should begin with center braid which measures as long as the difference between the width and length of finished rug. Turn braid and fold back an equal length in hairpin shape. Lace or sew these two together side by side to make the rug reversible. Sew round and round this core with a large needle and carpet thread. Be careful not to pull or stretch braiding strip when sewing or lacing.
After the braided oval rug is complete, it will now require light pressing with a damp cloth and a hot iron. When you finished everything, you can now sit back and let others admire your handiwork.
