Make Yourself a Reception Planning Roadmap: Set a Goal
Make Yourself a Reception Planning Roadmap: Set a Goal
If you are about to start planning your wedding reception you may be feeling more than a little overwhelmed. There are so many factors to consider and it's tough to make a decisions about what you want. You know that your guests are going to be making their own critiques and you don't want to disappoint. The best way to be sure this part of your day doesn't get put on the back burner but doesn't consume your life for the next several months is to set some goals.
In order to set an end goal for your reception come up with the vision. What describes you and your future spouse, what are your interests and shared passions, and what is the style you want to set for the event? Having this road map to start out is going to help keep you on track throughout all the planning and give you an idea of just exactly what you are going to be walking into when announced to your guests as husband and wife.
Now that you have your theme in mind and have set some goals for yourself, work backwards. Evaluate all the many parts and pieces that you are going to need to reconstruct this perfect event that you have in your mindwhich brings us to another point - don't keep everything in your mind. Gather every kind of inspiration that you can find all together in one place like a collage. Find pictures, magazine articles, pieces of fabric, centerpiece ideas and get them all side-by-side in one place. You already have enough going on in your mind without cramming all these ideas into it.
Two good ideas for cakes:
1) Unique Cake at Each table
If you choose to ditch the idea of a traditional wedding cake, but still aren't ready to say goodbye to cake all the way, then choose to have a bunch of smaller cakes. Using a cake as the centerpiece of each table will not only provide dessert but also decoration. This cake can be small, just enough for the number of guests at the table, and not as elaborately decorated as one would be if you had just one large cake. The benefit of this idea is that you never have to make too many tough choices when choosing a cake. You can have multiple flavors of both the cake and the filling and also have a variety of decorating done to them. Guests are going to love looking at all the different cakes, cutting into theirs to discover the flavor, and trading with a neighboring table to taste all the variety.
2) A Candy Bar
If you are ready to get away from tradition altogether and have a lot of fun with this part of your wedding day, then consider a serve yourself candy bar. This can be set up at one large table displayed in the room or at several different stations throughout. By using the bride and groom's favorite candies or a color scheme with the candy pieces, the room will be fun and colorful.
Remember that everyone is different and you can't waste time thinking about what so-and-so might think of your reception or how it will compare to the numerous other receptions you will attend for friends throughout the year. If you always keep your mind set on what suites your needs for the wedding day you can't go wrong.
Finally, don't be afraid to be flexible. You may think you know exactly what you want for your reception, but its okay to say goodbye to some ideas that just aren't working out. Your theme should be a guideline to help you plan but not a rule that you have to follow. When something new comes along that you'd really like to include go ahead and make some room for it. The most important thing is that you stayed true to the overall goal that you set and showed your guests the best glimpse of yourselves as a couple.
