Make an Image Smaller by Downloading This Fantastic Piece of Free Software!

When uploading an image to your pc (Especially from your digital camera) you can be rest assured that the image will probably be over 1 megabyte (1000 kilobytes)...... Certainly too large to email or insert onto a webpage!!. So our aim is to reduce the file size of the image to below 1mb and therefore make emailing (etc..) a lot less time consuming.

To accomplish all this and make an image smaller I use a piece of free downloadable software called IrfanView

IrfanView is extremely user friendly and easy to install on your computer (I would suggest, for easy access, to place in on your desktop after installation.)

Now to reduce your picture size with Ifran View please complete the following steps:

1) Double click the "Irfan View icon" on your desktop and a small black screen will appear with the products' toolbar across the top.

2) Then "Single click" on the yellow file icon at the top left of the toolbar to find the image on your computer that you want to resize.

3) Once you've located where you have saved your image, double click it and it will appear in the Irfan View black screen just below the toolbar. (Remember the image is still full size and hasn't as yet been resized).

4) Now with your image in place click on the "Image" tab just above the toolbar, scroll down and click on "Resize and resample".

5) A new dialog box will now appear giving the current dimensions of the image either in pixels, cms or inches (You can choose which one you prefer. I prefer pixels so for the purpose of this article I'll work in pixels)

6) The width of the image may be up as much as 2000 pixels but you will want to bring it down enough so that it fits neatly into your webpage and is easily emailed. An ideal width would be between 200-250 pixels. (With regards to the height.... If you keep "Preserve aspect ratio" ticked then Irfan View will automatically adjust the height in accordance with your chosen width).

7) Whenever you're happy you can either save it as a new image (Thus still keeping the original) or you can save it over the original.

8) Finally to download irfanView please click here==>> Irfanview

NB: Just a word of caution.....Lots of people believe that to make an image smaller all they have to do is "Click and drag" the edges. Now doing this will certainly make the image look smaller but please note that it will not reduce the filesize and you will still have the same trouble whenever you come to email the image or insert it onto a webpage.
