Make the Most of Your Weekend Break in York

The city of York in the north of England is a weekend getaway for tourists, English and otherwise. History, chocolate and scads of hotels and guest houses make it easy to enjoy a short visit. Then consider the next trip while listing what was missed on the schedule. Getting around the core of the city is fairly easy with the five bus-based park and ride sites. Regular traffic is restricted because the medieval streets are too narrow, and therefore, still scenic and historical looking.

The walled city of York, at the confluence of the Ouse and Foss Rivers was established by the Romans in 71 A.D. It was called "Eboracum" and various other things throughout its history. The Danish Vikings called it Jorvik in 866 A.D., and the first known reference to the name "York" was in the 13th century. Just seeing the ancient walls is reason enough to visit York, but it is a good-sized city with other offerings; population count 193,000 in 2007.

Guy Fawkes was born and educated in York before he attempted to blow up Parliament while King James I was inside. Memorial plaques and a pub in his name exist in York, and strangely, most people are interested in seeing something of him. On a lighter note, YorkBoat river cruises are pleasant and restful after walking around the city. The river is serenely smooth since a lock was installed in Naburn some time ago.

York is within two hours of London by rail, and became a business hub when the railroad connected the two in 1839. The National Railway Museum, established 1975, has given the word "enormous" new meaning. More than one train sits in the exhibit hall and there is more beyond it. Examples of luxury travel in the Victorian Era is well worth seeing and may even surprise many with the extent of the Victorians' comfort.

The temperate climate of the area is conducive to year-round visiting. It is cool in summer and mild in winter, so the interesting walking destinations are accessible whenever a trip is in the offing. The convenience of the hotels in York also facilitates sightseeing and ambling. Restaurant cuisine covers Europe, Asia and India, and there are pubs for every type of nightlife outings. Families, singles and adults who don't want to watch young singles mix it up can find an evening spot to do what they will.
