Makeup Tips that Keep the Stars Looking Good in HD

If you are ever flipping through the 500+ channels on your satellite TV, you might start to notice that all of the actors and hosts seem to have absolutely no physical flaws. Even the news anchors crouching towards 50 appear without a wrinkle, pockmark or dark circle. You'd think with the resolution on your new HD television that they would be brought down to the level of normal human beings. But, alas, their perfection seems resistant to advances in high definition technology!

So how do these actors and talk show hosts manage to look so good? It can't be blamed on Photoshop, like some of the impossibly flawless images you see in magazines and on album covers can be.

Here's the secret: it's lighting and make up. Unfortunately, you probably can't have a 3-person lighting crew following you around all day (your coworkers would get so annoyed!). So it seems like makeup is the one chance you have to emulate celebrity perfection.

Luckily, there are a few simple tricks you can learn to recreate that polished look. Use these and you'll be ready for your close up maybe even in HD!

Under Eye Circles

With the ever-more hectic schedules Americans are leading, dark under-eye circles are becoming increasingly common. When there's only 24 hours in the day, it's hard to juggle a job, a minivan full of kids and golden retrievers, and taking care of aging parents and still look refreshed. Here's how to cover up the damage.

Cucumbers are your new best friend. It's really not necessary to buy all of the cold crmes and compresses in your cosmetics aisle. A garden-variety cucumber will do. Just slice it, remove the peel and place over your eyes for 20 minutes each night before bed. This could be a good time to get in your meditation. Not only will you be more relaxed, but the puffiness will start to disappear.

For the stuff that won't go away, consider investing in a cheap concealer stick. You don't need to break the bank a drug store brand will do but aim for a shade lighter than your skin-tone/usual foundation. Make dots along the discolored spots and smooth in with a finger. The thicker, paste-like concealer is more heavy duty that the foundation you put on the rest of your face, and will provide stronger coverage. Also, the lighter tone provides a highlight effect to help "pop" your eye. You should follow up with a liquid foundation in your skin tone.

Skin

Never go to bed with a dirty face and drink lots of water. If you can stick to this age-old wisdom, hopefully your skin won't have too many issues. Here are a few less common tricks for skin maintenance.

Make sure your moisturizer has oil-free sunscreen in it. Have you ever seen an elderly woman covered in sunspots whose face looks like a squashed prune? Protecting your face from sun damage even in winter, when it's often the only part of you that's exposed will shave years off your "outer" age.

For those problems that can't be solved by behavior, use the concealer stick you bought for your under eye circles to dab onto any blemishes, broken veins or discoloration. Use foundation sparingly and always make sure to follow up with a loose powder. This will help set your makeup so that you don't sweat it off during the day, and it will prevent the oily sheen that can develop on your nose and forehead by the end of the day, especially in warmer months.
