Making A Prototype Of Your Invention: 6 Tips

When trying to market your invention or get financial backing for it

, you don't always need to have a prototype ready to present to prospective investors. However, the investors may demand to see one before agreeing to back you. In fact, it is easier to attract investors when you can present them with physical evidence of how your invention will work.

*Most inventors work on a shoestring budget while searching for someone to back them financially, so if you have to build a prototype of your invention you will have to be resourceful and get your prototype cheaply made with whatever materials are on hand, like duct tape, cardboard, wire, and even parts of other appliances and products.

*There are basically three kinds of prototypes. The first is a 'proof of principle' one which shows how the invention will function. This prototype may not be the whole invention but just part of it that actually demonstrates the principle. Then there is an 'aesthetic model' which shows investors what the invention will look like and doesn't have to be functional. Lastly, there is the 'pre-production' prototype which not only looks like the finished product, but is fully functional. The first two are cheaper to make but because they don't demonstrate how the invention will work in its entirety, it may not appeal to potential financiers.

*You could also make a 'working' prototype. It is not exactly a 'proof of principle' kind but one that will enable you to present something to potential financiers and marketing companies. You can build it using technology and materials that may not be in the original idea just to get the idea across.

*Sometimes, presenting a virtual prototype can work as well to sell your idea, and it is cheaper than actually having a physical prototype made up.

*Having a prototype not only proves that your invention will actually work, but also that you are the original inventor. It also helps you work out any flaws with the design and function, shape and size.

*It is easier to write out the descriptions and claims required in patent applications after having built a prototype.

Whether you are on a budget or not, you may have to take the help of a manufacturer when building your prototype. When approaching one, make sure that you don't give too much away. If you cannot because of the complexity of your invention, then it is best to sign a confidentiality agreement.
