Making Less Trash

We are in a consumer society

We are in a consumer society. This is not a negative remark. When you buy a product, use it, then buy me, business stays healthy. They are then able to spend the money they make and keep other businesses afloat. The problem comes in when consumers create waste. Containers and boxes end up in the garbage.

The myth that everyone seems to buy is that trash is hauled away to keep our environment clean. We have since wised up. We have been pushed into reality by pictures of landfills overflowing. This stuff sits in a pile in a landfill to further pollute our environment. But this is not a reason to stop spending money. You must purchase wisely.

Beginning with a Bag

Do you get plastic bags when you've been shopping at the store? This is a waste of a bag. It will eventually be in the landfill. Ask for a small bag or no bag. If the item is small, and not likely to spill and ruin your purse, place the item in your handbag or briefcase. This is the best reusable bag.

You also may want to carry a tote bag with you. You used to have to make reusable totes yourself. They didn't exist until a few years ago. Now many big companies use them. Some stores even give them away.

Trash and Junk Mail Junk mail is also adding to our landfill. In most mailboxes across the country, most of the mail we receive comes from unrequested advertisements from cable provides, thick catalogs from office supply stores, or weekly supermarket circulars. Junk mail is a waste of materials and energy from the moment it is produced.

Junk mail is horrible for the loss of trees. It wastes ink and consumes energy to be produced. It adds to the carbon footprint by burning fuel to transport it everywhere. If the end product is useful, it may be worth the effort, however in most cases, the item goes directly from your mailbox to your wastepaper basket. There are ways to stop the unwanted mail. It may take some time, but you will need to contact the senders and tell them to take you off of your mailing list.
