With the Olympic Rowing at the Dorney Lake coming in July

, and with the hype starting to build already, you could almost believe that Windsor and Dorney Lake were built expressly for the purpose of a week's rowing. Though the Olympics will likely be a flash in the pan event and great for the local economy, albeit briefly, we should remember that Windsor was built in 1075, just 9 years after the Battle of Hastings, and will exist long after the Olympics bandwagon has left these shores... and it's always a great place to visit.

And the figures prove it. According to Windsor Visitor Survey 2009, tourism is worth over 380 million to the Windsor economy, supports 5,900 jobs and makes up 11% of the total workforce.

It's easy to see why Windsor is such a premier tourist destination. With historic Windsor Castle and the famous Changing of Guard, Legoland Windsor, Ascot Racecourse, Eton and the Guildhall all within such easy reach, there is something to do throughout the year. With it being so popular, and with more than 630,000 annual visitors staying the night, hotels in Windsor and other accommodation in central Windsor are often at a premium, especially within the town itself. As such, in the holiday season, the rates tend to be sky high. In these economically constrained times, more and more people are looking at cheaper ways to visit Windsor.

Whilst there are numerous guest houses and self-service accommodation in the immediate area, if tourists are looking for serviced accommodation, they would do well to look out towards Bracknell and Wokingham. Hotels here generally service the business trades coming to the business hub of Bracknell however, they are still only six miles away from stunning Windsor. Though Hotels in the centre of Bracknell may not be very appealing for location, there are hotels that allow you are the best of both worlds.

An example would be Stirrups Country House Hotel, which fits nicely between the two. Situated in 10 acres of Berkshire countryside, it is two miles outside the Bracknell and less than five miles from Windsor. As such, could be deemed to be a hotel in Windsor and a hotel in Bracknell. Being a more business centric hotel, the model of Stirrups and other hotels in the area is to have rates higher in the week when your demand is greatest and drop the rates on the weekend when businesses close. Therefore, families can stay in serviced accommodation in Windsor and enjoy all of its attractions, but at a fraction of the cost. It makes sense on so many levels.
