Making sense of the different kinds of interior doors for your home or workplace

Concertina doors are an umbrella term used, in the UK and Australia most commonly, for a variety of door that does not open outwards or inwards with the help of of a hinge but rather folds vertically in several places, giving the look of a concertina, hence the name. To digress a moment, concertina doors are referred to as 'accordion doors' in the US and elsewhere, which has mostly to do with what the musical instrument is known by in those countries.

A concertina door can be divided up into multiple vertical panels, depending on the width of the door opening and the application. But an usual interior concertina door of standard width would have at least half a dozen vertical sections, although there are doors with as few as two (actually, these are called concertina doors). These are connected by some type of hinge so that they fold alternately inwards and outwards, very much the same as if you took a piece of paper and folded it vertically multiple times into strips, going first one way then the other, like a fan or, well, a concertina!

Concertina doors are commonly fixed at one end, and this anchored vertical strip is in fact the only one to rotate out from the doorframe like a normal door.

The vertical section at the opposite end is the one which comes into contact with the other side of the doorframe and typically has some kind of mechanism which permits it to be closed all the way and stay put.

There also has to be some kind of mechanism for concertina doors to be able to slide easily open or

closed - if you think about it, each section individually has to glide freely left or right, as the 'concertina' is 'squeezed' open or closed. This aspect of the door can be of paramount importance, as a cheap, poor track will not allow the door to open or close properly, and the door will constantly stick

when used. This might seem unimportant it can become a major inconvenience whereas a smoothly sliding door will be unobtrusive to use.

If you see concertina doors selling for a low price, be aware that this may be just where they have reduced costs, and you may end up sorry you tried to save a few coins.

They are installed wherever a lightweight option is required to subdivide two areas of a house or other type of space and in particular wherever there is not enough room to install a 'normal' door that swings out. That is why concertina doors can make a living space appear somewhat more airy as the door itself does not occupy valuable space in the room.

Concertina doors are often seen in industry and commercial contexts too, of course, often in much larger form. Here they are often used to split up huge spaces - most likely you have seen an airport hangar door take the form of a concertina door, where a normally opening door would not really be practical.

Also, if you attended a small school you may remember this kind of door being used to divide a single room into two groups of kids to try to provide at least some kind of separation and make the maximum use of a larger room.
