Malaysia: The Biggest bogof Of Them All!

Malaysia is a bargain, two countries for the price of one! Sliced in half by the South China Sea

. On one side, the peninsula with its mixed bag of Malay, Chinese and Indian flavours, while Borneo is home to the jungle and its array of wildlife, mountains and secluded tribes.

Flights to this unforgettable country are reasonable priced and hotels can be cheap, which is leading more and more British holidaymakers to choose Malaysia as their far-flung get away. Its clear to see why. Who wouldnt want to escape the dreary UK weather and head to a land of white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters?

Most visitors do just that, and head to the tropical beaches of the Perhentian Islands. The smaller island of Kecil offers numerous cheap chalets and lively cafes, which prove popular with the younger backpacking crowd. Besar, offers a quieter pace of life where youll find a higher standard of accommodation and a more relaxed ambience. If you cant decide, then hop from island to island, as theyre only about 10 minutes apart, by boat.

The variety of accommodation on offer is a delight and many options are inexpensive. Visitors can stay in traditional wooden kampong houses on the beach or in the jungle, in beachside hotels or an urban city lodge.

Kuala Lumpur is a city carved, over time, from the jungle itself. Its skyscrapers are the tallest in Southeast Asia and dominate the capital. KL, as its known locally, is a melting pot of diversity, with Malays, Indian migrants, Chinese prospectors and British colonialists all shaping the city.

Like everything else in this remarkable country, the cuisine gleans influences from its multi ethnic population. Eating out in Malaysia is truly a gastronomic adventure. Youre taste buds will thank you when you treat them to such delicacies as satay, nasi lemak - rice cooked with coconut milk and served with anchovies, nuts, cucumbers, a chili paste known as sambai and a choice of curries, rendang - meat slowly cooked in coconut milk and spices and keropok lekor savoury cake made from batter and shredded fish. Tipping is not customary in Malaysia, although the more expensive hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge to their bills.

Vaccinations are recommended before setting off on your holiday, as some tropical illnesses are prevalent in Malaysia, so remember to take a trip to your doctors and heed their advice. Holidaymakers are advised to stick to bottled water and avoid uncooked meat, fish and vegetables, as well as unpeeled fruit, ice and salads.

The air quality in Kuala Lumpur is poor, so caution should be taken by anyone with respiratory problems. The hospitals are of a high standard though, so in the unlikely event of requiring treatment, youre in safe hands. Just remember to have your health insurance at the ready!

Warnings aside, this is an exceptional country with so much to see, youll be hard pushed to take it all in. Lets shout Hooray for the flight and hotel bargains now available, which will allow us to hit Malaysia time and time again.
