Mahabalipuram, A World Heritage

Mahabalipuram, is a 7th century port city which was under the Pallavas. It is believed the city was named after either the demon king Mahabali, or the Pallava king Mamalla. Mahabalipuram is a historic city and has numerous historic monuments which were built mostly between the 7th and the 9th century.

Shore Temple, is one of the most famous monuments of Mahabalipuram. The temple is known for its mesmerizing beauty and looks fabulous when lit by moonlight. The splendid Shore Temple, was built by Raja Rajasimha in the 7th century. This stupendous temple has the shrines of both Shiva and Vishnu. This historical city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Most of the monuments of Mahabalipuram are rock-cut and monolithic in structure. The temples here represent the early phases of Dravidian architecture. The city also has many cave temples, sculpted reliefs, monolithic rathas (chariots) and structural temples which leave one awestruck.
