'Mamma Mia!' is a musical for the stage written by Catherine Johnson, a British playwright. It is based on the songs of ABBA and Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, former members of the band, were integral in the development of the show. The plot is fictional and features ABBA hits such as "Super Trouper", "Dancing Queen", "Lay All Your Love on Me", "Take a Chance on Me", "Money, Money, Money", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Thank You for the Music", "SOS", "Voulez-Vous", and "The Winner Takes It All."
The story follows a twenty year old, Sophie, on the verge of her wedding to Sky in Greece. She desperately wants her father to walk her down the aisle despite having no idea of his identify. Sophie finds an old diary belonging to her mother which details romantic trysts with three men, one of which is Sophie's father. Unbeknownst to and acting as her mother, Sophie invites all three men to the wedding assuming that she would know immediately which man is her father. When the men arrive, she is even more confused, and chaos ensues when the best friends of Sophie's mother arrive and stir the metaphoric pot.
The musical premiered at the Prince Edward Theatre in London's West End on 6 April 1999 and transferred to the Prince of Wales theatre on 9 June 2004. It is still in production at the Prince of Wales theatre as of 9 January 2011. The show ran in Toronto, Ontario at the Royal Alexandra Theatre from 23 May 2000 to 22 May 2005. 'Mamma Mia!" made its United States debut in San Francisco, California at the Orpheum Theatre where it rain from 17 November 2000 to 17 February 2001. It moved to Los Angeles, California at the Shubert Theatre with a run that extended from 26 February 2001 to 12 May 2001 followed by a run in Chicago, Illinois at the Cadillac Palace from 13 May 2001 to 12 August 2001. Finally, the show opened on Broadway on 18 October 2001 and is still running as of 8 March 2011 at the Winter Garden Theatre. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the show is choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.
'Mamma Mia!' also had tours in North American, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Asia, Japan, and Korea. An international tour has entertained cities such as: Dublin, Edinburgh, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Estonia, Durban, Brussels, Lisbon, Cologne, Paria, Munich, Vienna, Frankfurt, Zurich, Berlin, Belfast, Manchester, Dubai, Copenhagen, Hensinki, Tel Aviv, Shanghai, Beijing, Budapest, Prague, Glasgow, Athens, Paris, Monte Carlo, Stockholm, Instanbul, Florence, Auckland, Taiwan, Newcastle, Munich, Liverpool, and Cork. Moreover, as of 2011, the musical has been translated and performed in fourteen languages: English, German, Norwegian, Dutch, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Russian, Swedish, French, Indonesian, Portuguese, Italian, and Danish.
Throughout its run so far, 'Mamma Mia!' has garnered five Tony Award wins, four Olivier Awards, and two Drama Desk Awards and on any given day, there are at least seven performances of the smash hit occurring around the globe, so you should get your Mamma Mia tickets as soon as possible! The immense popularity of the stage musical encouraged a 2008 film adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan.
