Managing Change For Employee Relations And Labor Relations
Change is constantly occurring in everyone's life to some degree
.
Change, as I have come to understand it, is the loss of something familiar. A question that I am constantly asked is When are companies most vulnerable to union organizing campaigns?
Based on what I have witnessed as a labor relations and employee relations consultant, organizations are at their most vulnerable to labor unions when they are experiencing some type of internal or external change. When organizations undergo change, it hits people in different ways. Some people readily accept change, while others have a difficult time adjusting to what it will mean to them.
Vulnerable employees who are having a difficult time handling these changes can be manipulated into the belief that union power will make these issues disappear.
For example, imagine there is a massive organizational change which may have a direct impact on a group of employees. Let's call this the change trigger. When the change trigger hits, the first thing these employees will experience is a feeling of loss which in time will lead to grieving.
The grieving process may result in poor performance which will then heighten the amount of stress and pressure they are under.
At this point, the employees will begin looking for alternatives. The hope is that the employees feel comfortable enough to reach out to their managers for help.
If the relationship with their management is non-existent then the employees may begin looking for outside resources. This may mean changing jobs or it may mean seeking out a labor union to represent them.
If the employee or a group of employees do not believe that the company has taken their concerns into consideration, then in many cases they may feel like their only option is to begin contacting as many unions as possible until they feel their needs have been met.
Successful companies realize early on that the key to lasting change is to get the buy in of the employees from the beginning. Because when all is said and done, the employees are the true heart and soul of the operation.
