Managing Depression
Depression has many forms
Depression has many forms. How you deal with it is an individual choice. You may not know you are depressed, but rather, you may just feel tired and not interested in life in general. That's depression. Anytime you lose interest in things that you once enjoyed for no reason, you are depressed.
Learning the signs, symptoms, and reasons for depression is often the first step to seeking treatment and overcoming the problem. Depression can often be genetic, following generation after generation. Other times, it can be the result of a traumatic event in one's life. Perhaps you have suffered the death of a loved one, and are unable to deal with it. An injury that affects the quality of life can also lead to a person becoming depressed. In some cases there doesn't seem to be any specific reason.
There are also different types of depression. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a depression that affects certain people during the winter months, due to lack of sunlight and periods of forced inactivity. Post partum depression is sometimes suffered by women who have recently given birth. Major depression is a period where some individuals suffer extreme bouts of feeling overwhelmed. It may come and go during a lifetime. Dysthymia is a less severe form, but tends to last longer. The symptoms are not disabling, but tend to prevent the person from functioning at their best.
Feelings of sadness, emptiness, and guilt are a few of the first signs that a person may be becoming depressed. One may begin to isolate themselves from family and friends. A loss of interest in things that once they enjoyed is experienced. They may begin to show signs of fatigue. Their performance at work suffers, and thoughts of suicide may enter the thoughts. Their ability to think clearly and to make decisions is apparent. Crying for no reason seems to occur. A person suffering from depression often becomes quite pessimistic about the future, seeing nothing good happening for them.
Medical treatment is highly recommended for a person in this situation. Whether or not they realize it, the depression will only become worse as they are unable to cope with their problems. Unless someone they are close to recognizes the signs and is able to get the person to someone who can help, the overall condition of this person will deteriorate quickly. People who are depressed don't know what is wrong with them. They only know that they feel sad and hopeless. The future holds nothing for them. Don't be afraid to ask whether a person is feeling depressed. Perhaps they have been waiting and hoping that someone will come along and offer a helping hand. Get them to talk about it, if you can. This is often the first step toward healing. Realize that you are not a professional, and someone who is very depressed needs to speak with a person who is trained in dealing with this illness.
