Managing Security Guards
If you are given the task of managing security guards then there are numerous things you want to keep in mind. First of all, it's best to write down all he policies and procedures that you want your officers to follow. Usually referred to as Post Orders, these established rules should be signed by all guard staff so that all expectations are known.
Security officers must be made clear on what is expected from them. This can also be done verbally. Officers need to spoken to as often as possible regarding anything that is important for them to comly with. Never assume that guards know what the established rules are. That which is talked about should best be viewed as not being followed. Here are some topics that must be articulated.
Emergency procedures: what is to be done if there is a fire, earthquake, flood, fire? Make sure that each guard knows that the policies are. Also, who should be called? Make sure there is a list of who should be called for all emergency situations.
Customer Service: when it comes to treating clients, employees, and fellow-officers in a specific way, it's best to write-down how this should be. If, for instance, you want your customers to be greeted in a certain way, then it should be discussed, and, again, written down. You never want to be ambiguous about anything important.
Consider having an open door policy. One way to ward against a hostile work environment is to allow officers and, for that matter, all your staff, to speak to you openly, and freely. This can best be achieved if you allocate a certain time during the month for anyone to come to your office and chat. This assume you are the hiring manager. If you are not, then consider asking those who manage guards to keep abreast to how they are feeling and thinking. This can best be achieved if they make the officers feel comfortable enouh to be able to speak freely and openly in the first place.
In a new book Private Security Los Angeles there are many examples and helpful tips to managing security officers. One must always consider the specific guards they are speaking to. Just like all people react better to a certain approach, officers are the same way. You are not going to address a thirty year police officer the same way you will interact with a new recruit. The more experience you have in speaking to your officers, the better manager you will be. Everyone wins!
