Manali - Nestled In The Himachal Pradesh Mountains
Manali is a beautiful hill station located in the northern end of the Kullu Valley
at an altitude of about 2050 meters above sea level in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Nestled in the beautiful mountains of the Himachal Pradesh, Manali is located at a distance of about 270 km from the state capital Shimla. This small town is the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and from there it passes over to the Karakoram Pass, Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin.
Manali has great importance in the heritage and culture of the believers of Hinduism since it is considered to be the home of the Saptarishis or the Seven Sages in the Hindu Epics. The town of Manali can be divided into Old Manali and New Manali.
A study of the etymology of the place shows that it came from the earlier name of the place, Manu Alaya which means the abode of Manu. Sage Manu is the maker of the Hindu law. The Old Manali village has an ancient temple dedicated to sage Manu. Known also as The Valley of Gods, legends on Manali says that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great flood that destroyed the world.
Tourism plays an important role in the economy of Manali. Manali has a number of tourist attractions like Hindu temples, Buddhist Temples and a number of other tourist sites.
The main tourist spots in Manali include, Hadimba Temple built in 1533 A.D. with a magnificent pagoda roof which is famous for its exquisitely carved doorway. Manu Temple in Old Manali is dedicated to the sage Manu. Vashishta Temple is well-known for its hot springs. There are old shrines of sage Vashisth and Lord Rama in this temple. Van Vihar, situated in the middle of Manali, in front of the Tibet market on Mall road, is a famous place of hang out and boating.
Manali has a number of old and new monasteries that are frequented by tourists every year. Jagatsukh was the capital of Kullu once and has a number of old temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and to Sandhya Gayatri. The Arjun caves, yet another interesting spot in Manali is adjacent to it.
Solang Valley is a side valley at the top of the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh, and is known for its summer and winter sports like parachuting, paragliding and skating. Rohtang Pass, Kothi and Rahalla falls are the other beautiful sites in Manali.
Manali is not easily approachable by rail but is well-connected to the other parts of India by road and air. The nearest airport is at Bhuntar town, situated at about 50 km away from Manali.
