Manchester Hotels: Stay in the Cultural Capital of the North
Manchester Hotels: Stay in the Cultural Capital of the North
Manchester is full of cultural activities and offers so much for visitors to do and a wealth of history to explore. A cluster of museums and galleries have sprung up around the redeveloped Salford Quays area, located near to some of the newest Manchester hotels. Visitors will be spoilt for choice, as the centre of Manchester is full of historical sites that can keep visitors busy for a week or a weekend.
Manchester University hosts two of the city's best attractions. The Whitworth Gallery has an excellent collection of watercolours and textiles, housing works from Rembrandt, David Hockney and Lucien Freud. The Manchester museum has an excellent and wide ranging general collection of everything from archaeology and numismatics to a collection of Egyptian mummies. The city's Peoples History museum focuses on the history of workers' rights and the role of Manchester in shaping the modern worker in industrial and post-industrial society.
For more of the city's great industrial history the Museum of Science and Industry is an excellent place to go and see the machinery that drove Manchester. The greater Manchester Police museum is housed in an old Victorian police station and gives visitors an insight into the Victorian justice system and its discomforts. Prisoners were often in groups of ten or more in small cells and had to make do with sleeping on wooden pillows, a world away from the relative opulence guests experience at their Manchester hotels.
Salford Quays is an area of Manchester that visitors should not miss. The redeveloped docks are home to the Imperial War museum north and the Lowry, named after the painter LS Lowry. The gallery has over 300 works by Lowry and has over one million visitors per year. Not too far away is a completely different offering, Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United. Visitors can have a tour of the stadium and visit the museums to learn the interesting history of the club and eye the overflowing trophy cabinet of one of English footballs most successful club's.
The choices are vast for visitors that want to spend one of their days hitting the shops up. The northern quarter is full of independent shops where you can find exclusive items, or for something a little more high street the Arndale centre is not too far away. The Trafford Centre is a short distance from the city centre so visitors should jump on a bus and go to the shops or bargain hunt in the Lowry outlet centre in Salford where there are high street and designer stores. Most of the shops are not too far away from the popular Manchester hotels, so those who get carried away should be able to get their bags back quite easily.
