Manchester United snatches first place from Arsenal

The Red Devils defeated the Gunners by 1-0 and extended their undefeated streak to 16 games.

Arsenal fans are looking for explanations once again, just like it has been in the last five years, of why their team continues to lack the determination to win big games, and drown in the pressure of being the number one. If you are an Arsenal fan or just happen to be curious about the explanation then we have good news for you, you search is over for we have the answer to your question: acrophobia. That's right, as big as Arsenal's problems might be, it all summarizes into one single word used to describe the fear to heights, erroneously known as vertigo.

The Gunners arrived to Old Trafford on Monday as the solo leaders of the Barclays Premier League with 32 points after 16 games, one match more than the Red Devils whose game against Blackpool was postponed last week due to frozen pitch. Arsenal had the chance to put an end to the 15-game undefeated streak that Manchester United had, and extend their point advantage over the rest. It was also a great game to make a statement about how their youngsters had matured and where ready to deal with the pressure of being the solo leaders of the competition.

But just like it has been happening since the 2003-04 season when their last Premier League Championship was won, the Gunners failed the test. They just couldn't hang on to that first place not even for one week, and are now disputing the second place with Manchester City that -with their 1-3 road victory on Saturday against West Ham- reached 32 points as well, and only the goal difference (+15 from the Gunners over +11 from the Citizens) gives Arsenal the tiebreaker for that spot.

One header from Korean Park Ji-Sung at the 40th-minute of the first half, after a cross air ball from Portuguese Nani, was enough to put an end to Arsenal's leadership and continue with their unbeaten record this season. It was also Man U's third consecutive win in a row, making the best from this three game series at home where they defeated Wigan Athletic 2-0 on November 20, Blackburn Rovers 7-1 on the 27 and Arsenal 1-0 on December 13.

Now the Red Devils will visit Stamford Bridge on December 19 with the boost of being the new solo leaders, and in front they will have the host Chelsea (31 points) going through their worst streak of the season, since they have 5 games in a row of not winning a Premier League game. Sunday's game is a great chance for the Blues to vindicate themselves in front of their fans, and end with the three point distance that separates them from the first place.

The only negative news for Man U is that they will lose midfielder Ji-Sung -who is going through a great moment- for at least seven games, since he will be representing his country South Korea in the Asian Cup that will be held in Qatar next year from January 7th-29th.

The Premier League is just starting to heat up in this cold winter, and just like it happened to Arsenal, the leadership could suffer several changes in a short period of time.
