Manchester and Chester
The North West is a vibrant and cosmopolitan area with many cities and towns offering venues and attractions for all of the family
. Manchester is the most populous area in the north west and one of the most visited cities in England.
Manchester was a major textile and manufacturing centre during the industrial revolution when it became the world's largest and most productive marketplace for cotton goods. Manchester reached a peak of 108 cotton mills in 1853, thereafter the nearby town of Bolton became the largest centre of cotton spinning a title which was eventually taken by Oldham in the 1860's.
The city suffered greatly during the Second World War from bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe. It was targeted because of its heavy industry companies provided many components for the war effort, such as the Avro Lancaster bombers. It was not until the late 1980's when regeneration began to transform the city into one with modern apartments, office buildings and stadium redevelopment. The city's economy has since transformed, making it one of the fastest growing and desirable places in the UK with a strong service based economy, although some manufacturing companies have retained a presence.
