In his editorial article for the MBA supplement of one of Germanys leading daily newspapers--- The Frank Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Dr

. Joern Meissner, the Founder and Chairman of Manhattan Review, focuses on the prominent characteristics a successful MBA student needs to possess. According to him, though the good quantitative skills are essential for a manager to be successful, they alone are not enough. He opines that a handful of social skills and team work are a must for the long term success of a manager.

However, he is not happy since these important managerial qualities find almost lacking or are grossly neglected in business school education these days. Further, he moves on to discuss how brilliantly Lancaster University Management School has taken a lead role in integrating all these important skills in its current curriculum.

Dr. Meissner has highlighted how one of the well known academics, Henry Mintzberg, is famous for criticizing the on-going MBA programs. In one of his arguments he has exposed the true weakness of the existing curriculum. He argues that todays case studies are partially helpful to the students because these studies give only a feel for the daily life of a manager but never shed light on the importance of real-work experience. In his opinion, it requires more than strategies and analysis to lead the co-workers and subordinates effectively who arent just a set of data but complex individuals.

In his previous FAZ Article from 2007, Dr. Meissner had clearly mentioned that to be successful a manager should possess a strong and impressive personality in addition to having an excellent academic record. This article is the extension of his previous ideas as here he emphasizes the requirement of social skills as well as quantitative skills for those who aspire to become top managers.
