By Mansur Boydas Vahdi Boydas Mansur Boydas

I am aTrent student seeking to become social entrepreneurs in the Trent community known as Health First. As members of the Trent community, we are encouraged to start doing something for our community. Our concern is the health services provided by our University. We have discovered and uncovered the basics of a powerful health care system. We noticed that Trent University has met the first part of having an effective health system. In particular, the health center in Blackburn Hall is offering guidance regarding health issues to Trent community. However, we have also found that there is a lack of health services in the Symons campus and in need of a pharmacy. Our mission is to get the health standards of the community of Trent to higher levels. The ideas we are about to introduce do not hold any competition with the health service providers at Trent because we are only helping to improve the efficiency of providing health services along with Health center at Blackburn Hall. To achieve this goal, we further researched the health care services provided at Trent and created some recommendations on it. We believe that these measures will overcome the issues rising in the community according to what we have put together an executive summary including definitions and the recommendations with the detailed information. This executive summary is to be evaluated and approved by your management team.

ISSUES

After defining the issues, it is essential to develop recommendations which involve careful evaluation of solutions to the current issues in Trent University. As a result we are now enabled to face and recognize the issues at hand. This includes the improvements to the health services in the Trent Community, as well as the need to construct a pharmacy.

The details are below:

1) Health services

There is an increase in demand for health care services and a lack of health care services to support the demand. In reality, theSymons campus of Trent University is the main campus which holds the majority of the student population (approximately seven thousand). However, Blackburn hall is the only facility that is providing Symons campus with health care services. On top of that, majority of the Trent population is on the other side of Blackburn Hall. Additionally, the services provided by the health office are not sufficient enough to meet the needs of the entire community. We have studied the health care services provided by Blackburn Hall by surveying 52 students from all over Symons Campus. As a result, we have discovered that majority of the students (64%) have stated that the Trent Community needs more health care facilities, especially in emergency situations where individuals have to walk all the way to Blackburn Hall to resolve their illness. They have also commented on the insignificance of summer sessions due to the reason that many students, instructors and staff are in the Symons Campus. Therefore, the fall and the winter sessions are the main concern of our executive summary.

2) Pharmacy

To construct a pharmacy is also another key component of ensuring good health, especially because health problems are most probably dealt with the use of drugs from the pharmacy. Yet, Symons Campus doesn't have its own pharmacy. Having a pharmacy is essential for the Trent community because prescribed medicines can only be bought at a pharmacy. Yet we are aware that our budget for building a pharmacy is low, so we believe the best solution is to construct a mini clinic which can provide individuals with simple medicines and first aid responses.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Health is a major concern in society since getting sick will mean fewer students are capable of attending classes on a regular basis causing them to perform unsuccessfully in their academic field. In addition, when individuals get sick, it can become contagious if the disease is spread throughout the community. As addressed previously, we are concerned with the health of the community because we feel that students' health and well being are often put off or disregarded by the school and education system. We feel that there are three major issues that need to be conquered in order to resolve health issues in the university.

Firstly, more nursing students need to be introduced from the nursing faculty. This will allow us to have a nurse present at all emergencies regardless of the location of the college. Students would not have to prepare themselves to walk to Blackburn hall, which is located in west bank, through harsh weather conditions and illness. We believe that there should be a nurse situated at each campus at all times. We can ask senior students who are currently majoring in the medical field to assist and supervise in any case of emergency. This will also provide these graduating doctors with more experience, which will eventually help them further with their occupation. In addition to that, it will be especially beneficial if we can get some retired doctors to volunteer and perform medical activities. These volunteers will be authorized to give prescription medication that is appropriate for the patient's illness. Providing students with these services will allow them to receive immediate attention when they need it because it will be fast and easy. In order to build a place where medical activity and check-ups can take place, we will have rooms at each of the intersection of each campus. For instance, specific colleges such as, Lady Eaton and Champlain which are connected to each other. Consequently, these mini clinics will benefit the Trent Community. We have also come up with a way to record your health history by distributing health clinic applications in the beginning of the school year that would provide us with every student's health card number and student number. Thus, when they do need medical help, the card will be swiped and the information will appear on the computer database. We have noticed that many individuals who thrive for immediate medical attention do not receive it essentially due to the lack of doctors and nurses present at this university location. Hence, we need to introduce more doctors and nurses across the campus at multiple locations so that medical attention can be provided when it is needed the most.

We feel that it is vital for us to have at least one pharmacy on campus. Many times students who need medication do not feel well enough to walk down half an hour to the Blackburn clinic for medication; they eventually procrastinate until the situation gets worse, to solve this issue we need to make sure that medication is available conveniently. As mentioned previously, we are going to locate rooms known as mini clinics across the campus, these rooms will consist of medication cabinets, a bed, a computer, table and two chairs. These rooms will have medical equipment that will be donated by the health premises of the city of Peterborough and the medication will be donated by local pharmacies such as Pharma Plus and Shoppers Drug Mart. Blackburn clinic can also provide these mini clinics with samples and free equipment. We need to raise awareness and money for medicine and to reinforce our mini clinics. Raise awareness about our pharmacy and get students, staff and the residents of Peterborough to generously donate for a good cause. Donation boxes will be setup at the cafeterias of every campus. We will also increase tuition fees by ten dollars that will be used towards building and running the pharmacy. It is evident that having a pharmacy will help maintain a healthier community due to the convenience of medication. Thus, we need to have a pharmacy on campus for immediate health care.

CONCLUDING COMMENTS

This document is intended to raise awareness for the current issue of health services provided within the Trent community. Despite the fact that Trent University has offered satisfactory health services, it can be further improved into a more beneficial healthcare system. As a team of Trent students, we have constructed an action plan to resolve this ongoing problem by building a pharmacy and providing the community with more volunteers who are experienced with the medical field. However, building a pharmacy is not an easy task to accomplish due to the fact that money is needed to build the pharmacy in the first place. We can be financially supported by the donations given by the various organizations. As a result, we feel our mission can be accomplished if our suggested ideas are carried out. Nonetheless, our idea will not become competitive with other health providers at Trent since we are only trying to help them and the community. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Health First
