Marbella - more than a holiday resort

Marbella is centrally located on the western Costa del Sol about an hour from Malaga International airport and about seventy minutes from Gibraltar airport. Having been a quiet fishing town it was brought to the world's attention thanks to two very influential people Principe Alfonso de Hohenlohe and of course the very colourful and extremely controversial Mayor Jesus Gil.

Jesus Gil invested heavily in Marbella and sanctioned the building of many of the important developments that still exist today making Marbella a major tourist resort and business community for the Costa del Sol. His vision was to create a St Tropez style resort attracting the rich and famous for their holidays and during the seventies, eighties and early nineties he achieved this easily with many a-list celebrities taking holidays in Marbella and many purchasing homes along the Golden Mile.

The Golden Mile of Marbella was essentially created by Principe Alfonso de Hohenlohe with the building of the Marbella Club Hotel and later the Puente Romano Hotel, both of which were luxury five star establishments. Being a playboy and avid party goer he invited some of the world's elite crowd to party alongside him in Marbella which firmly placed it on the map.

Over the years Marbella has gone through a type of transition and moved away from a resort just for the rich and famous. Plagued with corruption cases and organised criminal activities like money laundering Marbella lost its appeal to many of the a-list celebrities and transformed into a traditional holiday resort still attracting thousands of tourists everyday.

Nowadays Marbella has grown to cover many smaller resorts from Guadalmina in the west through to Cabopino is the east and including the other famous playground to the rich and famous, Puerto Banus.

With literally hundreds of restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels and shops, Marbella is still a very good option for a holiday and with many expats owning holiday homes in Marbella, there is a great choice of self-catering accommodation.
