Marble Temple, a majestic religious creation


The Marble Temple, or Wat Benchamabophit as it is known in the Thai language is amongst the most resplendent and modern of the royal wats' of Bangkok. The temple was given its name for the glistening white Carrara marble, imported from Italy, of which it is principally constructed.

The temple was constructed in 1899 by Rama V's half-brother, Prince Narai. Its significance is highlighted by the fact that Thailand's present king, before his coronation, spent his time as a Buddhist monk at this location. Presently the magnificent temple is not only a scenic attraction but also a focus of learning for erudite Thai monks.

There is no doubt that the gleaming polished marble which is even featured in the courtyards and pavement is one of the temple's major attractions. The temple is unusual in that it does not contain a prominent central sanctuary. On the other hand it features numerous relatively small buildings which blend conventional Thai Buddhist architecture with innovative European characteristics like stained glass windows.


The temple's bot the finest and most sacred section of a Thai temple contains an imposing golden statue of the Buddha which is placed in front of a lighted blue coloured background. Walk further into the temple and you will see a majestic cloister which features more than 50 bronze images of the Buddha which depict many diverse sculptural styles from different Buddhist countries. Behind this cloister an imposing Bodhi tree may be seen, which was brought from the site where the Buddha is said to have attained Enlightenment, Bodhgaya in India.

The Marble Temple is also an ideal location to observe the various traditional Buddhist rituals and observances including religious processions and festivals. In the early morning, the resident monks engage in the intensely beautiful and melodious traditional chanting, which will undoubtedly intrigue the visitor. An unusual aspect at the Marble Temple is that the monks do not go out in search of alms as they do in other temples; instead the laity visit the temple and offer alms to the resident monks.
