Marijuana: Various Uses For It

Marijuana is a substance derived from a plant called cannabis

. When some people hear the word "marijuana", all they can think of is it being a recreational drug that appeared on the scene during the rebellious 1960's. This assumption is riddled with inaccuracies.

Marijuana has actually been around for centuries. It was used globally for medicinal purposes for many years before it received its current questionable reputation. It is true that its popularity spread during the 1960's. This was a time of war protestors in the United States rebelling against the government by wild music, dress and recreational drug use. This substance, along with LSD and other heavy duty drugs were sweeping the countryside.

Marijuana is usually brown or green in color and consists of seeds, leaves and stems. It can be dried, smoked or baked into foods to eat. Medicinally, it can be taken in powder, liquid or pill form. Cookies containing the substance are sometimes offered as anti-nausea remedies, as well.

This cannabis product has a slew of nicknames, including pot, grass, Mary Jane, weed, and reefer. It has been used recreationally in order to produce feelings of calm, happiness, peace and enhanced enjoyment of music and food. Recreational use is illegal in the U.S. It has been used medicinally to aid sufferers of cancer, glaucoma, stroke, and HIV/AIDS.

The downsides of it recreationally are increased anxiety, paranoia, and a possible precursor to more serious drugs. Not everyone is convinced of its value medicinally either, but it has become a legal medical alternative in fourteen American states and many countries around the world.

A little known use for a portion of the cannabis plant called hemp is the making of sturdy fabric. The word "hemp" is often associated with recreational drugs, as well, and while it does come from the same cannabis plant as the more commonly recognized portions, it doesn't contain such strong concentrations of THC. THC stands for "delta-9-tetrahydrocannibol" which is the active chemical ingredient found in weed.

The hemp fabric is now used in making clothing items such as rugged jeans. Levis denim blue jeans were originally constructed of hemp fabric. The hemp is grown, cultivated and woven into fabric, which is referred to as industrial hemp. It can also be used effectively to make paper and rope.

During the 1600's the British Navy made all of their sails, pendants and flags from the material because it withstood the rough sea-traveling conditions. During the 1700's and 1800's, farmers in Virginia, Massachusetts and Connecticut were actually ordered to grow the product and could use it to pay their taxes or as legal tender.

Marijuana has had quite a colorful history and a still has a diverse assortment of uses. With the current discoveries of its efficacy within the medical community, it will continue its interesting path.
