Market Trader's Stories
Markets of all descriptions are becoming more and more popular in the UK. Markets sell everything from food and clothes to antiques and flowers and everything in between.
The location and the goods on sale really give the market some character, but what really makes a market are its stall holders. Here are some of their diverse stories.
Mike is 40, he has been a market trader his whole life, and sells a plethora of bric-a-brac and antiques at Spitalfields Market in London. He often brings his ten-year-old daughter Lilly to help him out. "I've been a market trader my whole life and couldn't imagine doing anything else. I bring Lilly because my Father used to bring me and I want Lilly to appreciate the market and learn about it as I have done, it's part of her heritage. Unfortunately times are getting hard. The rent for my pitch has gone up something like 200% in the last couple of years as its become more popular or trendy to become a market trader, but I don't seem to be making that much more money. But I would rather give up my flat and sleep in my van than give up my pitch; it would be like giving up my heritage."
Madaka, 30 spends half of her time in her native Japan and half of her time selling her beautifully authentic, traditional silk kimonos at the market. "My Great Grandfather was a Kimono trader, and then the art got lost for several generations so I feel it is my fate to take it up again. I source and buy my Kimono's in Japan, then ship them and myself to London, where I have a stall here at the market. I live in a hotel whilst I am here, but that doesn't matter, I love my job, and business is getting better all the time."
Peter and Ruben are Father and Son, who sell books of all descriptions from their stall: "This job is hard work for not very much money, but we love the atmosphere here, and we love books, so as a result we are poor men who love our jobs. The cold and the early mornings are the worst part, but once you're up and you get here you forget about it."
Campbell is an artist, designer and collector of vintage who runs a stall selling his work amongst some treasures he has found in other places and from other eras: "I came to the market one day and thought, this is where I want to be. There is so much vibrant energy about the place and so many different people here for whatever reason. But no matter how different we are all of the stall owners look after each other, if I have to pop out for a couple of hours I know I can ask anyone to watch my stall, it's like an extended family."
