Marketing Your Value With Success Stories

How do you demonstrate your value to a potential employer and address the question every hiring manager has in mind

, "What can you do for me?" Three C stories. Circumstances, Conduct and Conclusion. They are examples of your success management of a problem you faced, how you acted upon it and how you resolved it.

Story telling is such a basic form of communication and has been valuable in every society since man's beginning. You can have significant control over your interview when these stories are strategically used. It can be the difference in whether or not you get the position you want. You can use this method as an answer to a question, add it to the primary answer as an example or to even steer the conversation toward an area that showcases your best abilities. Your capacity to handle the problems will become evident.

- How to "Three C" -

Identify the issue. Keep it short. A couple of sentences will suffice. Make sure the issues you present show up in your conclusion as having been resolved. If there was an additional positive result, mention it as well. This is especially powerful if you identified other areas of concern in conjunction with the basic issue and address each one. Point out how you analyzed each item and took appropriate steps, including any authorization necessary. Spare the listener the minutia of each action. 3-4 steps using strong verbs to show the actions you took. Build the action steps up so the sequence is easy to follow and the listener can envision the road to success! You may have to field intervening questions asking for details. That's great as it shows interest. Stay on track enough to finish the whole story! The conclusion can send a very powerful message to the employer because it's a bottom line item. This is where you talk about the measurable results of your actions. Numbers, percentages and dollars speak loudly. Did you save money? How about time? Is the process more efficient? Did you increase revenue? This is where your story makes its final impact.

Now that you know how to construct a Three C story, here's the challenge - hone it down to 90 seconds! That's right! Make it concise and full of impact and give the listener the best elements of the story. Have several different stories ready for use. Know the details cold so you can speak fluently about them. Show the hiring manager exactlt what you can do for them?"
