Marking Historical Events With Collectable Coins
Coin collecting, as a hobby, is very much linked to history
. People collect coins to mark events in our nation's history and culture. They are a visually alluring keepsake and a great place to start a conversation about a historical time or place. Part of the fun of coin collecting is learning about the historical events surrounding some of history's most important coinage.
With the hundredth anniversary of the Titanic fast approaching cultural interest in the subject has reached a fever pitch. James Cameron's 1997 film masterpiece Titanic has been re-released in 3D. Cameron is currently working on another film project relating to the Titanic. He has even commissioned a special submarine to take him to the deepest depths of the wreck. The creator of the PBS' hit show Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, (the first episode of the series features the Titanic heavily) is currently working on a Titanic themed miniseries in the vein of Downton Abby.
The world of coins is also celebrating this historic event. Colorized coins relating to the anniversary are already available and are moving fast. Titanic related coins come in many forms, shapes, sizes, and colors. They are available in any price range so everyone can celebrate this momentous occasion together. If you are looking for a good gift for a coin collector I would highly suggest any number of Titanic themed coin sets.
With an election fast approaching the window may be closing to get Obama memorabilia like a Presidential dollar or colorized Obama coinage. The election year has already proved tumultuous and I don't think anyone can say for sure who will occupy the Oval Office next year. You may have another 4 years to stock up on Obama coins, then again you may not. I would play it safe and add some Obama coinage to your collection now.
The window is also closing to buy state quarters. State quarters were issued from 1997 to 2008 and then extended to include US territories like Puerto Rico and Guam. The program is running out of places to commemorate! That means the window in which you can purchase mint quality, uncirculated state quarter is rapidly drawing to a close. The state quarter program is among the most successful and popular programs enacted by the U.S. Mint. It may even go down in history as one of the finest moments in modern American coinage. Make sure you make state quarter part of your collection before their run ends.
