, but for anglers, its known for being a top spot for marlin. The warm waters off the coast are a fertile feeding ground for the baitfish-chasing marlin, along with numerous other species of predatory pelagics.
Catering to the increasing numbers of marlin-hungry anglers flocking to the Sunshine Coast, there are now a number of highly professional fishing charters to choose from, such as Mooloolabas Top Catch Charters. They have been kind enough to provide a rough guide to marlin fishing in the area, so read on to find out more!
What varieties of marlin can we catch?
The Sunshine Coast is home to three types of marlin: blue, black and striped.
Where can we catch them?
There are a couple of well-known spots off the coast such as the Cape Morton Wide and Chardons Reef, but it all depends of the size of fish youre after and what tackle youre using. On the nearer reefs (sometimes just a few hundred metres off the coast) youll find smaller juveniles usually black marlin and as you head out to the continental shelf, youll start finding the mature, fully grown ones.
When do the marlin bite?
They are most active during the warmer months, as this is when the baitfish run down the coast. However, it is still possible to find them year-round, although the numbers do thin a little bit towards winter. September to April is the best time to try your luck.
How big do the marlin grow around here?
In Australian waters, the biggest marlin will probably be adult blues and blacks, which will tip the scales at anywhere between 100 and 300 kilograms (if youre lucky!). Closer to shore, youre more likely to come across specimens in the 20-50kg range remember, although theyre smaller than the others, theyre still a huge, spectacular fish!
Are marlin good eating?
Compared to other deep-sea fare like tuna or swordfish, marlin dont stand out as particularly tasty table fish, although thats not to say you cant eat them. However, most anglers prefer to catch and release, as this keeps the population healthy. In any case, it would be difficult to fillet and freeze a fish the size of a cow!
