Massage Therapy Can Benefit Hypertension In Ramsey County, St. Paul Mn

The American Heart Association reports that one in every three adults has high blood pressure or hypertension in the United States

. That comes to a total of about 73 million adults. There are also about two million teenagers and children who have high blood pressure in the country. This is dangerous because hypertension is a deadly disease. It can be prevented and treated, though, through various massage therapy modalities. You can ask for several massage therapy modalities such as reflexology massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy or even pregnancy massage therapy from a professional therapeutic massage spa in Ramsey County, St. Paul MN.

Patients with high blood pressure have higher risks of succumbing to strokes, heart attacks, heart failure, heart disease, arterial hardening, arterial aneurysm,

chronic renal failure and eye damage. When high blood pressure becomes chronic it can lead to organ damage. It is inevitable that untreated high blood pressure decreases a person's life expectancy.

Blood pressure measurement covers systolic pressure over diastolic pressure. This refers to the pressure of blood flow on the arteries. Systolic pressure is the highest pressure exerted on the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood outward. Diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure exerted on the arteries as the heart relaxes immediately after a contraction. Normal blood pressure should be below 120/80. Blood pressure at 139/89 is already pre-hypertensive while 140/90 is hypertensive. Early detection of hypertension is important so that it can be corrected immediately and complications can be prevented from developing.

High blood pressure is most often triggered by stress and emotional tension. Therapies to reduce stress are, therefore, often prescribed for patients with hypertension. Examples of such therapies are massage, progressive muscle relaxation techniques, mind-body relaxation techniques, biofeedback techniques and meditation. Among these, massage therapy has been found to have the most beneficial impact in not only lowering blood pressure but also decreasing stress, anxiety and depression.

The Touch Research Institute, the University of Miami School of Medicine, and the Nova Southeastern University in Florida did a study in May 1999 with 30 hypertensive adults. The participants' blood pressures have been under control for six months prior to the study. They were randomly assigned to a massage therapy group and a progressive relaxation group.

Participants in the massage therapy group received 30 minute massage therapy sessions in the afternoon or early evening twice a week for a total of five weeks. During the same period, participants in the progressive relaxation group did 30 minutes of self-administered progressive muscle relaxation exercises with the same frequency.

Participants were assessed before and after the treatment period. Their blood pressures were regularly monitored throughout the study. The State Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) questionnaire and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) self-report symptom inventory were used to measure emotional levels. The participants' levels of urinary cortisol and catecholamines were likewise measured because these biologically active amines have been found to have a major effect on the nervous and cardiovascular systems.

After the five week treatment period, both groups showed lower levels of anxiety and depression. Only the participants in the massage therapy group, however, showed lowered levels of sitting blood pressure and salivary and urinary stress hormones in addition to lowered depression, anxiety and hostility.

Reflexology massage therapy, Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy are some of the massage therapy modalities that can prevent and treat hypertension. Make them a part of your lifestyle by going to a professional therapeutic massage spa in Ramsey County, St. Paul MN. This will go a long way in maintaining your health.
