And now, because I bought, I found other applications, such as see how my hot plate heaters, or how much heat from the sun to produce parts of my house, so I had an idea on how to improve insulation.

Laser Thermometer
The reason I purchased this thermometer was for determining how hot a pan was before using.
I pan fry steaks as a preferred method and it is important to make sure the pan is extremely hot before putting the meat in the pan.
This device is just right for this task. It allows me to check the surface in several spots - to make sure the pan is evenly hot.
I find it accomplishes the task for which I purchased it. I have not yet tried it for temps of foods or oil - that will be a whole different thing.
Excellent for cooking and HVAC
I have had this product for a few weeks now and I use it mainly for cooking temperatures, but found plenty of other things to do with it such as check insulation and cooling loss for over the summer. It seems as accurate as it needs to be, but honestly even though it comes with a handy manual thermometer I haven't crosschecked it for accuracy. Because it is an infrared beam, it has trouble with really shiny surfaces like unpainted/polished metal and glass. I find that if you place a piece of masking or painters tape to those surfaces and let it normalize to the surface temp of the object it works fine, unless of course you are putting it on a really hot surface. The hottest thing I have measured with it was hardwood charcoal at 730F and coldest was -2 in the freezer. I love it, it makes a great toy for my dog to chase around when I am checking temps around the house and it seems to find new uses everyday (which it seems to find a way to be used everyday too) and the best part is I haven't changed the battery yet.
A Fun Toy that does a Great Job
This is one fun toy. Originally I purchased it in order to see what each refrigerator and freezer shelf was reading so I would know which were the coldest. I use it also for getting the correct temperature in deep frying and it seems to be very accurate as compared to another thermometer I have that straddles the pot. It is never more than about 2-3 degrees off and since it is not a cake that is good enough for me. An excellent value for an excellent, lightweight, easy to use thermometer. There is no on/off switch but it does go off automatically after about 15 seconds, as the manual describes. Total battery life, also according to the manual is 15 minutes. I have been using this thing over and over for a month and it is still on the original 2 AAA batteries, which are included.
The back light makes the display very clear and legible without reading glasses nor squinting. I find that it is best to point it from a distance of at least 5-6" and the reading is more stable. Very pleased with this purchase.

I recently purchased this 'very affrdable' infrared thermometer to see about the temperature loss I have in our home. I was skeptical of the accuracy but was reassured when I tested next to our digital furnace thermostat... the thermostat read 66 degrees F and the Infrared thermometer read 65.9 degrees F. So I was reassured that the temp reading is accurate at the lower spectrum of the readings. Very easy to use, just point and 'shoot'... and fast too. Will be 'testing' other objects temperatures as time goes by! It does come with batteries and a handy carrying case (cheap plastic but serves the purpose) Make sure to read the instructions... very easy to use. Further testing to be conducted by the 'head chef' in the kitchen...
