Studies of attraction have found that family and friends can have a strong influence on whom one dates. Now, a new study finds that strangers also play a key role in who individuals find to be attractive.

Mate choice copying refers to a phenomenon in which an individual copies the mate selection of others. In other words, individuals become attracted to people who others find to be attractive. This phenomenon has also been documented among birds and fish.

A recent study examined 40 men and 40 women who were asked to watch videos of speed dating interactions. Researchers found that male interest in the video increased if the male participant featured in the video appeared to be interested in the woman. Similarly, female interest in the video also increased if the women in the video seemed to be interested in the men.

However, there was one key difference: women's interest in the men declined if the female participants in the video did not appear interested, whereas men's interest in the women remained the same even if the male participants in the video did not appear interested. Men were also found to be more interested in the video if the male participants were considered as attractive or more attractive than they were.

According to researchers, these findings reveal that relative attractiveness matter more to men than it does to women. It appears that men in the video who were at least as attractive as the male study participants had a greater influence on who the participants found to be attractive. The same could not be said for the female study participants. Evolution may play a role in mate choice copying, which dictates that individuals look to others when determining with whom to mate. While the results of this study are interesting to note, additional research will be needed in order to gain more insight.
