Material Handling Focuses On Diversification

Dewitt, NY June 14, 2010: As a part of its continued effort to provide young professionals in the forklift, storage and handling, conveyor and general material handling industries with up-to-the-minute information on the latest industry trends, the June issue of MHEDA Edge features an article from Springer Equipment (Mobile, AL) President Ted Springer. The article, called "Finding New Doors To Knock On."

The article centers on Springer's belief that, in order to thrive in difficult economic times, a company must be willing to diversify. It's the best way to get the proverbial foot into new doors. For Springer Equipment, this meant moving beyond the traditional forklift market that had been its bread and butter for years and moving into the high-tech world of automatic guided vehicles (AGVs).

It wasn't easy, but the company committed to it. "It meant a big shift for us," says Springer "We've always been in the forklift truck business, but we are now also aligned with some of the nation's best automatic guided vehicle manufacturers as well, we've had to do a great deal of learning."

However, the hard work appears to be paying off for the company "Having the skill and knowledge to provide AGVs and robotics makes a big difference for us," says Springer We've been able to talk to the large corporations about enhancing their efficiency in the long run, with a return on investment of three years or less in most cases. They've responded well to it and are very interested in our solutions."
