Many people who travel overseas get a phrasebook and assume that it will help them get by. It will in some situations, but certainly not in all. To truly speak a language, you need to master everyday skills using that language as your only one. This means learning how to do math in that language. If you're in Paris, no one is going to count your change back to you in English, and you'll need to be able to comprehend the language of math to get by. Unfortunately, when you learn French in the classroom, these lessons are oftentimes lacking.

To understand the language of numbers, you need to actually hear people do things like make change, do basic math problems and so forth. This helps you to understand how this form of abstraction really works in the target language. For instance, in English, we say "2 minus 1 is 1". In other languages, other ways of stating the same thing are used. You may have subtle differences in phrasing that can make a huge difference, such as "2 less 1" or "2 take away 1". The best way to learn French fast, in this regard, is to use materials that feature people in real life situations.

Plays and musicals lend themselves to these purposes nicely. Instead of an entire classroom session concentrating on math, the math comes into play when the characters go about their everyday lives. They may be eating at a restaurant and need to figure out a tip or they may be buying groceries and need change. These situations are close to what anyone visiting these countries will face. Having heard them navigated before, students will be prepared. This is one of the best ways to learn French fast as it applies to real life situations.

There are materials that incorporate songs in the French classroom that can help with this, as well. Songs provide a way to reinforce what needs to be learned through repetition, but without making that repetition a chore. If you can get students interested, they learn much more quickly. Songs that cover every day activities, such as brushing your teeth, going to the store, buying a gift for someone and so forth, can incorporate other activities as part of the narrative. This is a great way to teach basic language skills for everyday life.
