Maui Vacation Tips For The Financially Challenged
Although actually getting there can be expensive
, it is easy to find wonderful Maui activities for the financially challenged, making it clear why sometimes the best things in life are free - or at least cheap. Making the most of Maui does not have to cost a bundle if you avoid most of the tourist traps and set off to explore the island's natural beauty.
Cheap hotel rooms are generally hard to come by in Hawaii, but deals can be found at many Maui vacation condo rentals. Because they often include all the comforts of home, staying in a condo rental gives you the chance to experience Maui more as a local than as a tourist. These accommodations often include a fully equipped kitchen, for example, allowing you to prepare your own meals. You can shop at the local farmer's market for fresh, affordable food and local delicacies, and avoid expensive chain stores and restaurants.
If you are staying on the south side of Maui - especially in Kihei, Wailea or Lahaina - consider renting a bicycle instead of a car. The terrain is very flat, and you can cruise along neighborhood streets and avoid the traffic. The best time to tour on a bicycle is in the morning and evening, as the trade winds in the afternoon can make pedaling a chore. On the north side of the island, where the roads are windy and narrow, more experienced bikers should be fine; however, the roads are not recommended for a laid-back family ride with children.
Visitors will have to rent a car to travel to Hana since the winding road is much too hazardous for bicycles. For the ideal Hana Highway experience, drive a jeep with a removable top or a convertible so you can admire the jungle canopy and scenery that frames the road. Make sure your vehicle actually has a functioning top though, as island rains can hit without warning.
While you are in Hana, stop by the Wainapanapa State Park, which features spectacular black sand beaches and historic landmarks. Admission is free, and inexpensive cabins and campsites are available for reservation through the state park system. To visit the O'hea Gulch State Park - commonly known as the Seven Sacred Pools - you must pay admission to park and camp. Take advantage of the many picnic table pavilions in the parks and on the beaches, which include grills to cook an outdoor dinner - preferably with fish you caught, or fruits like guavas, mangos and coconuts that can be purchased at local stands along the way to Hana.
Beyond the typical - and expensive - tourist attractions that Maui is known for, this tropical paradise has much more to offer to those who are on a budget or just seeking a different kind of experience.
